More Glimmers of Hope
We asked what’s been keeping you going—and you answered! Below are a few more of the inspiring—and truthful—messages we’ve received:
“I never respond to opportunities like this. Today, I'm making time as something happened that warmed my heart and restored my faith in academia. My faith wasn't in tatters, but this definitely restored it to its highest level.
My son just finished classes at the University of Wisconsin and he was sharing his posted grades when he received an email from one of his TAs. This was a History of Science course and my son had shared this course was difficult but that his TA was wonderfully supportive. This weekend she sent out an amazingly beautiful and heartfelt email expressing her gratitude to her students for their work and their attitudes. She went into great depth on what their engagement meant to her as an instructor and how fulfilling this had been for her. I've never seen or heard of an instructor doing this and it made my heart swell.”
“Honestly? Anger. It's not an inspirational or uplifting answer, but it's an accurate one. I, like many other colleagues, am outraged by the Trump administrations attack on higher education, not to mention other long-held American principles. It's politics at its most craven, and their justifications for their actions are so transparently absurd that they're not worth crediting. And, I'll admit, a portion of my anger is reserved for those universities and administrators that I see rolling over and showing their bellies, abandoning those same principles to avoid drawing the ire of the federal government. But rather than sinking into depression, I choose to get angry. Angry on behalf of our students, angry on behalf of our colleagues, angry on behalf of myself. Then I remind myself that it's up to us to hold the line - to push back and resist wherever possible. And I keep doing the work.”
